On Thursday, February 2, 2024, Breakthru Events hosted the first open mic of the semester. Advertised on Instagram and in MBP class, students in MBM were buzzing with excitement from the day it was announced. The event was held at Copper Branch, a cozy vegan restaurant located near campus. Copper Branch is a small welcoming environment with outstanding and friendly staff. The close proximity to the school makes it a great venue for the event. The size of the venue creates a more intimate feeling between the performer and the audience. The night was packed with some incredibly talented performers, and I am constantly blown away by the amount of talent within the program and community.

The evening started off strong with a performance from Jayden Garner, an open mic regular. He gave a spectacular performance of Pearl Jam’s Last Kiss encapsulating the emotions of the song beautifully. This open mic also saw the return of Mel, who sang original songs that she had never performed before. Her songs show a raw vulnerability, where she wears her heart and her emotions on her sleeve. At the event we got to see a debut performance from trio Maxine, Sofia, and Angie. Sofia’s vocals suited Lizzy McAlpine’s Ceilings wonderfully, with the support of Maxine playing guitar and Angie drumming. There was a long list of incredible singers, some honourable mentions being Emily, Matt, Eyrica, and Mona. Santi closed the show with an energetic performance of original songs, ending the night on a high note.

There were so many great performances at the Open Mic, that you just had to be there to get the full experience. There are not enough words to give justice to the talents we have in the program and community. The audience was engaged during every song and showed lots of support to everyone who went up to showcase their abilities. The night was an overall success, leaving the attendees wanting more.

Stay tuned for more Breakthru Events to be announced on Instagram @breakthruevents.
