On March 17th, 2023, U2 released a double-album titled Songs of Surrender. Many fans who were anticipating the release of this album – which was fittingly released by the Irish band on St. Patrick's Day – felt that the album was almost not needed. This was due to the fact that all of the songs on the album were re-recorded.

Some have asked why U2 would do such a thing in the first place. The band gained a mass amount of success after their debut album release, Boy, in 1980. Their generation-defining sound has dominated the ears of their audience, leaving fans to wonder why U2 would not just release an album full of new songs. The new album was produced by the band's guitarist, The Edge, and released by Island Records. It has been rumoured that the album may be based off of Bono’s 2022 memoir Surrender, but that does not change the fact that the audience did not have a great liking to the album. Just like making a promise you can't keep, many fans were disappointed after the album’s exciting promotion in early 2023. Since its release, Flashback has not heard or seen a review by a larger competitor who gave U2 a five-star rating for Songs of Surrender. Although a handful of fans have taken a liking to the new directions of old songs, a mass majority of U2’s fan base has been left with one question: Why?

Revisiting the albums from the early days of your career does not mean that you have to re-record everything 30 years later. It is best to leave the past in the past, not recreate it, and not let it repeat itself. However, the intimacy that is brought from the passion of the re-recorded songs cannot be ignored. Bono’s rockstar ego is still immensely powerful. The Edge’s guitar work still invites the band's listeners with open arms. U2’s passion for music is still there, and while this may spark a lot of questions in the minds of their audience, one may be able to set all of the delusions aside and conclude that U2 may not have any new material. Maybe they were bored? Maybe this is the sign of an upcoming tour? But alas, one can only dream while listening to this album.
