On January 19, 2024, Green Day released their fourteenth studio album, Saviors. The album was produced by Rob Cavallo, who also produced Dookie and American Idiot. Saviors has fifteen songs and forty-five minutes of energy, passion, protest, and rebellion. Saviors has received a lot of praise online from fans, with many stating that it is the best album since American Idiot, which was released in 2004.

The American Dream is Killing Me is the opening track of Saviors that, in true Green Day fashion, gives a statement on the troubled political landscape in the United States with lyrics such as “From sea to shining sea, whitewash upon the beach, My country under Siege.” While The American Dream is Killing Me was the leading single for Saviors, it was one of the last songs recorded for the album. The American Dream is Killing Me is the perfect powerhouse pop-punk song to start the album.

Dilemma lyrically takes on a more vulnerable role on Saviors, foreshadowed by the opening lyrics: “Welcome to my problems, it’s not an invitation.” The lyrics follow the story of lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong’s substance abuse and the invasive questions that often come with it. When Armstrong shouts, “I don’t wanna be a dead man walking,” you really believe him. Father to a Son is an emotional ballad that can act as a continuation of American Idiot’s Wake Me Up When September Ends. The song represents Armstrong’s determination to provide the best life for his son. Armstrong’s serene vocals are accompanied by an acoustic sound that merges well with the commanding drums.

Corvette Summer is the type of song that you want to listen to while driving down the road with

the windows down on a summer evening. The song is very bass-driven, highlighting the abilities

of bassist Mike Dirnt. The album title track, Saviors, captures the relatable feeling of wanting to

be saved and wanting to be better. Fancy Sauce wraps up the album with a melancholic song

with lyrics that border on bitter, is quintessential Green Day.

Overall, this is a great album, and many fans are excited to have new music that feels like old

Green Day. Along with the release of Saviors, Green Day will also be going on tour beginning

May 30, 2024. While on tour, they will be playing both Dookie and American Idiot in their

entirety to celebrate the 30th and 20th anniversaries of the albums.
