Welcome back to Flashbacks ‘5 Tips and Tricks’ series. We are continuing our series with Yasin Erenay, an artist manager for TakeOver Artist Management.

1) Always keep your eyes and ears open. A manager should always keep his/her eyes open. One cannot know where the opportunity arises. You might miss the opportunity to sign the upcoming star as your client because you might have not carefully watched their performance on the stage, or you were too busy to listen to their demo. Some may call it luck. It is not luck. It is knowing to use the opportunity.

2) Manage time. Being an artist manager is a very satisfying but very demanding job. During your artist’s album release or before your artist’s tour, you will be overwhelmed with tasks. Manage your time properly and meaningfully. Always set achievable goals and timetables. Then do your tasks accordingly and promptly.

3) Take breaks. Being an artist manager is tough. You are the decision-maker of an art machine. You will call promoters, venues, journalists, and producers and make decisions for your artist. You are also the responsible person for the day-to-day operations of your artist. To be able to perform this demanding job and preserve your mental health, always take breaks from time to time to breathe. There will be times that you will not be sleeping. To be able to be ready for that your mind needs to heal during those breaks. Never let any disturbance disrupt your breaks.

4) Do not try to imitate what is popular. You should come up with new and creative ideas for your artist. A popular artist became popular by doing so. If you try to copy that for your artist’s new appearance, that will not cause your artist to become popular. Your artist will be a copy.

5) Last but not least... Always be a part of the bigger team. Artist manager, artist, tour manager, artist’s producer: they are all part of your team trying to achieve success. Know their strengths and weaknesses. Use those strengths to make your team stronger and overcome those weaknesses. You are the brains of the team but without other organs, you will not function. Always look after your team.”
