Trevor Kelly is an emerging artist based in Whitby, Ontario. He is 25 years young with a strong passion for music. Trevor describes himself as an artist and producer who is finding it a challenge to step foot into the music scene of Durham Region. His biggest influences consist of Jack White of The White Stripes and Childish Gambino. “I like Jack White because of his power to turn old blues music into something new. Childish Gambino is not defined by one genre, that is something I heavily admire.”
As a student in the Music Business Management program at Durham College, Trevor has found a liking to the college music studio. “The biggest challenge for me is not having the proper space at home. So, the school gives me more room to write and record.” Although Trevor has not yet made his debut in the local music scene, he is eager to play locally and build his audience from the ground up. “The program has made a huge change on my outlook on the [music industry],” he stated. “I’ve learned a lot from the producers in this program. It is eye-opening.”
Trevor writes his own songs. He is currently working alongside producer Alan Joy Matthew who is providing the instrumentations to Trevor’s upcoming musical works. Throughout his interview with Flashback, Trevor discussed his inspiration for songwriting and that he is not interested in putting himself in a musical box, but a musical universe that is ever-expanding. “I am very broad in terms of rock music, both hard and soft. I do not want to limit myself to one type of rock music. I want it to be to the point where it sounds unique to me.”
Currently, Trevor Kelly is working on 2-6 new songs. His debut album is set to be released by TakeOver at the end of April and will be considered a compilation album. The album has been his main project in the last three months. “The first song took three weeks” he laughed. It is currently going to feature Trevor’s most recent musical works, including his upcoming song ‘Should Have Known’. “This album is going to help me get off the ground,” he stated, “though I’ve had trouble knowing where to start, this will be my breaking point.” The album will be available on all major music platforms.
Trevor has been continuing to make music while enjoying his time at Durham College. “Just do it if it’s something you really want. Just go for it!” He will be featured on the upcoming ‘CENT’ LP, produced by MBM students, available in the beginning of April.
