This month, Flashback and Durham College’s Music Business Management program are celebrating Black History Month. Black History Month is not just for people of colour, nor is something that is only celebrated during one month of the year. Black History Month celebrates the Black history of our planet; it is an annual celebration that recognizes the generations who struggled with discrimination and racism, slavery, and human rights.

You can celebrate Black History Month by educating yourself on Black history, supporting Black-owned businesses and Black organizations, learning and unlearning what you have learned about Black history so far, and amplifying the message of ‘Black Lives Matter’ (BLM). This is an opportunity for you to know your Black history, and to help pave the way to a better future. By celebrating Black History Month and celebrating Black history every day, you have the ability to change who is in power and to become empowered.

Black History Month is not centred around Black trauma or only one theme. Black History Month is a time for you to engage and celebrate Black liberation. We are celebrating the voices being heard, the excellence, and the futures of our current generations.
